Paint & Polymer Degradation - A Practical Approach to Accelerated Testing

All polymers are subject to environmental conditions that cause them to deteriorate. The rate and type of deterioration depends on the type of polymer and its exposure to a variety of elements. Of primary importance to material degradation are light, heat and moisture acting on the surface of the material singularly or in concert and with these and other variables.

This seminar will examine how these variables interact with polymers naturally and how this interaction may be simulated in a laboratory and used to predict material life expectancy through accelerated test programs. This seminar focuses on various light sources and their spectral power distribution and how they can be used to identify an appropriate simulation to natural weathering.

Moisture uptake, heat and their effect on polymer degradation will also be discussed along with their role in polymer degradation. This seminar concludes by discussing how accelerated test data may be correlated with actual outdoor weathering in an attempt to predict the durability of a polymer product.
